Engaging Activities for Early Childhood Learning

Welcome to the June edition of the HIPPY Halton Blog! We're excited to bring you a month full of engaging activities and resources to help prepare your children for success in Kindergarten and beyond. Let's dive into the weekly themes and activities we have planned for you and your little ones.

WEEK 1: Literacy and Motor Skills

What We're Learning:

This week, we focus on developing literacy and motor skills. Reading books aloud helps improve vocabulary, language skills, and cognitive abilities while fostering creativity. Engaging in craft activities enhances fine motor skills, and dancing improves gross motor skills and physical coordination.

Activity 1: Reading Aloud

June 1st is Dinosaur Day!

Reading books to children enhances their vocabulary, language skills, cognitive abilities, concentration, and creativity. Let's celebrate Dinosaur Day by reading "Dinosaur Roar!" by Paul & Henrietta Strickland.

Activity 2: Dinosaur Paper Craft

Create an easy paper dinosaur craft with your child.

Activity 3: Dinosaur Dance

Move and dance like a dinosaur with the T-Rex Dinosaur.

Activity 4: Lift-the-Flap Book

Inspire your young reader by making their own interactive lift-the-flap book.

Activity 5: Developing Language Skills

Check out this video for activities to develop your child's language skills.

WEEK 2: Math

What We're Learning:

This week, we focus on building foundational math skills. Through fun and interactive activities, children will develop number sense, improve their ability to recognize and count numbers, and engage in creative projects that make learning math enjoyable.

Activity 1: Number Sense with Sensory Play

Combine sensory play with early number awareness using a squishy bag project. Use a zippered sandwich bag and some hair gel for a fun, hands-on learning experience.

Activity 2: Counting with Pasta Bracelets

Make a bracelet with 10 pieces of dry pasta. Here's how:

Supplies Needed:

  1. Dry tube-shaped pasta (rigatoni or ditalini)

  2. Vinegar

  3. Food coloring

  4. Pipe cleaners

Instructions:

  1. Dye the pasta: Combine a cup of dry pasta, a teaspoon of vinegar, and food coloring in a zip-top bag. Spread on a baking sheet and let dry completely (about 3 hours).

  2. Make 6 bracelets, each with a different number of pasta pieces (5 to 10). Count and identify the colors and numbers as you go.

Activity 3: Math Worksheets

Download our math worksheet this week to practice number recognition!

WEEK 3: Welcome Summer

What We're Learning:

This week, we celebrate the arrival of summer on June 20th by engaging in activities that promote literacy, creativity, and physical movement. Summer-themed books, crafts, and songs help children connect with the season and enhance their learning experiences.

Activity 1: Summer Reading

Enjoy reading "Pete the Cat at the Beach" and "Froggy Learns to Swim."

Activity 2: Summer Crafts

Engage in fun summer crafts activities.

Activity 3: Summer Song with The Wiggles

Sing a summer song with The Wiggles.

WEEK 4: Self-Regulation and Emotional Skills

What We're Learning:

This week, we focus on self-regulation and emotional skills. By recognizing and understanding their emotions, children can develop better self-control and empathy. Activities are designed to help children express their feelings and learn strategies for managing them.

Activity 1: Understanding Emotions

Try out our HIPPY Halton feelings cards and explain each emotion to your child. Discuss when and why we feel certain ways and how to manage these emotions.

Activity 2: Emotions Scavenger Hunt

Print and cut out emotion cards. Play a scavenger hunt game by hiding the cards and then finding and acting out the emotions on each card.

Activity 3: Alphabet and Emotions

Learn the letters of the alphabet and explore a range of feelings from A to Z.

Activity 4: Developing Self-Control

Watch a story about developing self-control with Hank.

Activity 5: Stories About Emotions

Read along beautiful stories about emotions.

Stay tuned for more activities and updates from HIPPY Halton. We hope you and your children enjoy these fun and educational activities throughout the month of June.
